Theoretical Foundation: • We selected Caspi’s adaptation of Penchansky and Thomas’s 1981 model (Caspi 2012) as a starting point, though consider accessibility to also encompass presence and number (counts) of food outlets within a given area based on prior studies (e.g., Apparacio 2008; Talen and Anselin 1998). We prioritize the following key dimensions of neighborhood food access:
o Accessibility: Locations of the food supply (e.g., food stores, restaurants) and ease of getting to these locations
o Availability: Presence or adequacy of healthy and less healthy food products
o Affordability: Food prices and people’s perceptions of worth relative to costs
Our prioritized dimensions of food access are also relevant for the workplace, whereas food availability is the most relevant dimension for the home.
