ADOPT Core Measures: Biological Workspace (NIH/NHLBI)

The Accumulating Data to Optimally Predict obesity Treatment (ADOPT) Core Measures Project aims to advance adult obesity treatment in the face of well-documented individual variability in response to a wide range of treatment modalities (MacLean P et al, 2018).  There is a growing understanding that this variability is due to a combination of behavioral, biological, environmental, and psychosocial factors but at present we lack datasets to comprehensively identify these factors and examine how they interact to influence treatment response.

ADOPT provides a framework for how obesity researchers can generate the evidence base needed to guide the development of tailored and potentially more effective strategies for the treatment of obesity. The identification of a core set of measures to be used in a consistent manner across adult weight loss trials represents a first step in an ongoing process which will be refined and updated dynamically as the science advances. The accumulation of data on key factors across the four ADOPT domains-- behavioral, biological, environmental, and psychosocial--should generate a more precise description of the interplay among these factors and their coordinated impact on treatment responses, which, in turn, can inform the design and delivery of effective, tailored obesity treatments.

The list of core measures and constructs from all four ADOPT domains can be found at https://www.gem-measures.org/workspaces/ADOPT. This initial list is comprised of the most promising constructs and measures based on the currently available evidence.

The Working Group recognized that there are many potentially important measures being developed and refined, as well as newer and more promising constructs that will need to be considered in future revisions of this list as the science advances.  To facilitate this work, there are four “in progress” ADOPT workspaces in GEM:

Within these workspaces, GEM users can update or add supporting information for constructs and measures, comment on them, and rate them.  If you wish, you enter additional constructs and measures into GEM for consideration in future revisions of ADOPT.

Contributing to this effort is incredibly easy

  • Login as a GEM user to enter information or comment.  If you have not previously used GEM, you can register by clicking the link in the upper right-hand corner of this page.
  • Proceed to any of the four ADOPT workspaces by clicking on one of the above workspace links.
  • Select ‘measures’ along the left-hand side of the screen.  You will then be able to comment on the measures entered in GEM or add new ones.
  • If you add a new measure but are not sure which workspace is most appropriate, pick one and enter it.

Several institutes from the National Institutes of Health convened the ADOPT Working Group  to lead this effort to solicit and evaluate measures within each of the four domain-focused workspaces and integrate them into one ADOPT core measures list.
