General Information
Measure Name: Cancer information seeking
Measure Type: Scale
Construct: Information seeking from non-clinical sources
Primary Content Area: not specified
Secondary Content Area:
Brief Description: Respondents were asked about their exposure to information about three cancer prevention and three cancer screening behaviors. These included exercise, fruit and vegetable consumption, weight-loss attempts, colonoscopy, the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test (men only), and mammography (women only). Sought exposure was assessed first, using two questions for each topic (see below). If the respondent answered yes to actively looking for information about a specific cancer prevention and screening behavior, the respondent was asked to answer a second question about where and/or from whom he/she sought information.

The two seeking questions were combined to form a dichotomous measure of whether or not a respondent sought information from each source. Those who answered “no” to the first question about having sought at all from any source were coded as non-seekers for each source, so their data would not be counted as missing.

Sought information exposure from doctors was omitted, as well as sought information from “other sources” because the responses had no specific referent. The source-specific measures can be summed to form an index (range 0-4) of sought exposure specific to each of the six behaviors.
