Physical Activity Level (PAL)
General Information
Measure Name: Physical Activity Level (PAL)
Measure Type: Derived
Construct: Expended Energy (EE)
Primary Content Area: Obesity
Secondary Content Area: Diabetes
Brief Description: Physical Activity Level (PAL)
In lieu of directly measuring NREE, which can vary significantly with levels of physical activity, a questionnaire-based assessment of Physical Activity Level (PAL) can be made (1). PAL is defined as TEE/REE. The questionnaire provides a self-evaluation of physical activity during work and leisure activities. The PAL questionnaire is simple and has been validated by correlations with PAL measured by calorimetry. It has been considered applicable across multiple studies.

With measures or calculated values of REE, an estimate of TEE can be made from PAL
TEE = PAL x REE
